Patients: FAQ's

Q. What is PathFinderTG®?

PathFinderTG is a molecular-DNA based laboratory test. It is a powerful new tool that enables definitive and complete diagnosis for difficult cases where cancer or pre-cancerous conditions exist or are suspected, but are not resolved using standard pathology review.

Q. How does it work?

When you have a biopsy or surgical procedure, part of your tissue or fluid is sent to a laboratory for diagnosis. Those specimens are routinely analyzed and stored in the pathology and cytology departments of your hospital or clinic. In certain cases, your pathologist or clinician may request that further testing be done to resolve a diagnostic question or dilemma. Such specimens may be sent to RedPath for the PathFinderTG molecular-DNA analysis. No special collection procedures are required. Testing can be performed on all routine hospital or clinic pathology materials such as histology and cytology slides, and non-blood body fluids which are archived, frozen or fixed. The materials will be sent to RedPath and a final report will sent out to your clinician or pathologist within five to seven working days.

Q. Why is this test important?

With a molecular based disease as complex as cancer, early and definitive diagnosis is not always possible. Advances in imaging and sampling have increased the difficulty of diagnosis by providing smaller and smaller specimens which may be in the earlier phases of cancer progression. Without the clear, accurate and definitive molecular-based information that PathFinderTG provides, patients may cycle through second opinions, testing and retesting and delayed treatment—even undergoing unnecessary or inappropriate treatment. PathFinderTG provides physicians and patients with an accurate and objective diagnosis, offering strong support for the right treatment plan.

Q. Can PathFinderTG help to analyze my kind of cancer?

The PathFinderTG test is applicable in analysis of tissues of the GI tract, pancreas, head and neck, brain, breast, genito-urinary, and gynecologic tracts. Leukemias and lymphomas are not amenable to PathFinderTG at the present time.

Q. Is the PathFinderTG test right for me?

The best way to determine if PathFinderTG is right for you is to discuss the test with your doctor. This test may not be appropriate for all patients or cancer types. Once you review the information with your physician, may discuss this with the pathologist, oncologist or cytologist involved in your case. If additional information is required, please have your physician contact our customer service department at 1-800-495-9885.

Q. How do I order the PathFinderTG test?

PathFinderTG can only be ordered by your physician. Because it is a test that is performed on minute amounts of the tissue or fluid removed during your biopsy or surgical procedure, you do not have to undergo any additional procedures to get the results. However, only your physician can determine if the PathFinderTG test is right for you.

Q. Do I have to provide a blood sample to have this test performed?
