Patients: FAQ's

Q. What is PathFinderTG®?

PathFinderTG is a molecular DNA-based laboratory test. It is a powerful new analysis that enables an improved diagnosis for difficult cases where cancer or pre-cancerous conditions are not resolved using standard pathology examination.

Q. What is needed to perform the test?

When you have a biopsy or surgical procedure, part of the tissue or fluid is sent to a laboratory for diagnosis. Those specimens are routinely analyzed and then stored in the pathology and cytology departments of your hospital or clinic. In certain cases, your doctor may request that further testing be done to resolve a diagnostic question. Specimens may be sent to RedPath for the PathFinderTG analysis. A final report will be sent to your doctor, typically within seven business days.

Q. Why is this test important?

Because cancer is a complex disease, it may be difficult for your doctor to reach a definitive diagnosis. In the absence of clear diagnostic information, patients may cycle through second opinions, testing and retesting and delayed treatment—even undergoing unnecessary or inappropriate treatment. PathFinderTG provides doctors with an improved diagnosis, enabling them to provide a better treatment plan.

Q. Can PathFinderTG help to analyze my kind of cancer?

The PathFinderTG test can be used to analyze many types of cancer. At the present time, leukemias, lymphomas, and circulatory system tumors cannot be analyzed with PathFinderTG.

The best way to determine if PathFinderTG is right for you is to discuss the test with your doctor. If additional information is required, please have your doctor contact our Client Services department by phone at 1-800-495-9885 or by email at info@redpathip.com.

Q. Do I need additional biopsies to have PathFinderTG done?

PathFinderTG is performed on very small amounts of the tissue or fluid removed during your biopsy or surgical procedure. If you have already had a biopsy, in most cases you do not have to undergo any additional procedures for PathFinderTG. However, your physician will determine whether an additional biopsy is needed.
